In August 2021, Gigabyte suffered two separate ransomware attacks within a short timeframe. The initial attack by the RansomEXX group resulted in the theft of 112 GB of data, including proprietary source code for Intel Manageability Commander and confidential AMD documents. Following a refusal to pay the ransom, approximately 7 GB of this stolen data was leaked publicly. Shortly after, the AvosLocker ransomware group executed a second attack, exfiltrating additional internal documents such as corporate agreements and non-disclosure agreements, threatening further leaks unless negotiations occurred. These incidents disrupted customer support services and websites, forcing the company to take affected servers offline and involve law enforcement. Both attacks utilized ransomware-as-a-service models, with AvosLocker uniquely demanding payment in Monero cryptocurrency. The breaches exposed vulnerabilities in protecting critical business information and valuable partner assets.
