An Garda Síochána

An Garda Síochána is the national police service of the Republic of Ireland, tasked with maintaining law and order across the state. It provides a broad range of policing functions that include community patrol, criminal investigation, traffic management, and public order management. The organisation operates under the authority of the Department of Justice and is headed by the Garda Commissioner, who is appointed by the Government. A notable incident in the organisation’s recent history occurred on 4 August 2016, when a zero‑day malware attack exploited an unknown vulnerability in its computer networks, prompting temporary system shutdowns while critical systems such as the Pulse database and public website remained unaffected. The attack led to the involvement of the Computer Crime Unit, which investigated the source of the malware and collaborated with external experts to restore security. This event highlighted the organisation’s ongoing focus on cyber‑defence capabilities and its response to evolving digital threats.
