MegaFon, also known as МегаФон, is a Russian telecommunications company headquartered in Russia. It provides mobile voice and data services as well as broadband internet access to customers across the country. The company operates as one of Russia's largest mobile and internet operators, serving a broad consumer base that includes individual users and business clients. Its network infrastructure supports voice calls, SMS, mobile internet, and fixed-line broadband offerings. In January 2025, MegaFon was the target of a significant cyberattack conducted by Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), which disrupted its mobile and internet services in Moscow, St. Petersburg and several central regions. The attack also affected downstream operators Yota and NetByNet, causing temporary loss of connectivity for their users. As a result of the disruption, access to online platforms such as Steam, Twitch and Discord was reportedly blocked, services that are said to be used by Russian military and intelligence personnel. Roskomnadzor confirmed the service interruption, while Russian media described the incident as a successful carpet DDoS attack. Despite the observed outages, MegaFon publicly stated that its network was operating normally and attributed the access problems to independent causes. The episode highlighted the company's role as a critical node in Russia's telecommunications ecosystem and its exposure to sophisticated cyber threats.
