Profile
Sun Trust Bank, operating under the alias Sun Trust Bank, was a commercial bank that provided a range of financial services to individual consumers, businesses, and institutional clients. Its offerings included retail banking products such as checking and savings accounts, mortgages, and personal loans, as well as commercial banking services like corporate lending, treasury management, and capital markets solutions. The bank also delivered wealth management and investment advisory services to high‑net‑worth customers. It served markets primarily across the United States, with a notable presence in the Southeastern region.
In June 2016, cybercriminals exploited weaknesses in the bank’s payment routing mechanisms to steal approximately $3.6 million from a Miami Beach City Hall account held at Sun Trust Bank. The fraud involved the rerouting of automated vendor and government payments over several months, and the compromised account at times held daily balances as high as $144 million in public funds such as tax revenues and municipal fees. After the losses were discovered, the bank halted affected transactions, replaced the compromised account, and cooperated with FBI and local law enforcement investigations.
Sun Trust Bank was subject to federal banking regulations and operated as a nationally chartered institution, which required adherence to standards set by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve. Its distinguishing attributes included a strong focus on relationship‑based banking for mid‑size and large corporations, complemented by a robust retail branch network that served consumer clients. The incident highlighted the bank’s responsibility to safeguard public‑sector accounts and prompted internal reviews of fraud detection and payment‑processing controls.
In 2019, Sun Trust Bank merged with BB&T Corporation to form Truist Financial Corporation, after which the former Sun Trust operations became part of the Truist subsidiary structure. As a result, the bank’s legacy brand was retired and its services are now offered under the Truist name.
