Profile narrative
Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal (JNPCT) operates as a specialised container handling facility within the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) complex in India. It provides services such as the loading, unloading, storage, and transfer of containerised cargo for both domestic and international trade routes. The terminal supports shipping lines, freight forwarders, importers, and exporters by managing the movement of goods through its berths and yard facilities. Its core function is to enable efficient container flow between sea transport and inland distribution networks.
Situated on the west coast near Mumbai, JNPCT forms part of India’s largest container port, contributing to a significant portion of the nation’s containerised trade volume. The terminal benefits from a strategic maritime location that offers access to major hinterland corridors via road and rail connections. A distinguishing attribute of JNPCT is its focus on container operations and its reliance on an integrated port‑wide management information system that coordinates vessel berthing, cargo documentation, and gate processes. This system is central to synchronising the various operational activities that keep the terminal functioning.
JNPCT is owned and operated by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, a government entity under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and functions as a subsidiary unit within the port trust’s organisational structure. In January 2022, the terminal experienced a suspected cyber attack that targeted its management information system, severely disrupting operations and rendering critical digital services inoperable. The incident forced the diversion of at least one container vessel to other terminals within the port complex, halted vessel berthing due to an inability to process required documentation, and led to an estimated several days of downtime, compounding pre‑existing operational challenges.
