Profile

Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation, known as Petrobangla, is the state-owned entity responsible for the management of hydrocarbon and mineral resources in Bangladesh. It oversees the exploration, development, and production of natural gas and crude oil fields across the country. The corporation also handles the processing, transmission, and distribution of natural gas to power plants, industrial users, and residential consumers. In addition to hydrocarbons, Petrobangla is involved in the exploration and extraction of mineral resources such as coal and limestone. Its activities support the national energy supply chain and contribute to Bangladesh's industrial and economic development. The corporation operates under the guidance of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.

As the national oil and gas company, Petrobangla holds a monopoly over the upstream and midstream segments of the country's natural gas sector. It regulates production sharing contracts with international oil companies and ensures compliance with national safety and environmental standards. The corporation plays a central role in implementing government energy policy, including strategies for energy security and diversification. Petrobangla maintains a portfolio of joint ventures and partnerships with foreign firms to bring technical expertise and capital investment to complex projects. Its technical competencies include reservoir engineering, seismic surveying, pipeline construction, and gas processing technologies. The organisation also conducts research and development activities aimed at improving recovery rates and reducing operational emissions.

Petrobangla is wholly owned by the Government of Bangladesh and functions as a statutory corporation under the Companies Act. It serves as the parent entity for numerous subsidiary companies that specialize in specific functions such as exploration, production, transmission, distribution, and mineral extraction. These subsidiaries include companies focused on gas transmission, gas distribution, and liquefied natural gas operations, among others. The corporate structure allows Petrobangla to delegate operational responsibilities while retaining strategic oversight and policy direction. Financial reporting and auditing of the corporation and its subsidiaries are conducted in accordance with government accounting standards and international best practices. The board of directors comprises government appointed officials and independent experts who oversee corporate governance and major investment decisions.
