Mobistealth isa consumer spyware firm headquartered in the United Kingdom. It develops monitoring software that is intended to be secretly installed on a target device. Once installed, the software collects GPS location histories, text messages, Facebook chats, and other communications from the device. The product is marketed as a tool for tracking activity on smartphones and computers. The company advertises legitimate use cases such as monitoring children or employee devices. At the same time, Mobistealth promotes the software’s capability for spousal spying. The surveillance operates covertly, transmitting the intercepted data to remote servers controlled by the operator.

Mobistealth specializes in stealthy surveillance tools that raise legal and ethical concerns because they can facilitate illegal wiretapping and domestic abuse. In February 2018, a hacker breached Mobistealth’s infrastructure, exfiltrating tens of thousands of customer accounts, business records, GPS logs, and personal messages. The breach drew attention to the widespread security weaknesses present in the consumer spyware industry. Motherboard reported the incident and verified portions of the stolen data by confirming account ownership and contacting affected individuals. Mobistealth did not provide any comment or response to Motherboard’s requests for information. The attacker stated that the motivation for the breach was opposition to the firms’ role in enabling illegal surveillance and facilitating domestic abuse. The event highlighted Mobistealth’s position within a sector that provides covert monitoring capabilities to end users. It also demonstrated the vulnerability of such companies’ infrastructure to attacks aimed at compromising the data they collect.
