Profile

Woorimal Academic Society is an academic organization headquartered in South Korea. As an academic society, it engages in scholarly activities and supports research initiatives within its community. The organization operates within the higher education and research sector, serving scholars and students in South Korea. Its primary focus lies in fostering academic collaboration and knowledge dissemination. Being based in South Korea places it within a national landscape of academic and research institutions.

In January 2023, Woorimal Academic Society was among several South Korean academic and research institutions targeted by a Chinese-language hacktivist group known as Xiaoqiying, Genesis Day, or Teng Snake. The group conducted data exfiltration and website defacement attacks, stealing approximately 54 gigabytes of information from the society. Defacement messages claiming an "invasion" of Korean internet infrastructure were posted on the compromised website. The stolen data was subsequently leaked on cybercrime forums such as BreachForums and Ramp Forum. The attackers recruited new members through Telegram channels that were later shut down. Their campaign, motivated by ideological patriotism toward China, showed no evidence of financial motives or direct government ties and later expanded to target entities in Japan and Taiwan.
