Karnataka State Police

The Karnataka State Police (KSP) is the primary law‑enforcement agency responsible for maintaining public safety, preventing and investigating crime, and upholding the rule of law throughout the state of Karnataka in India. Its core functions include routine patrolling, criminal investigations, traffic management, crowd control during public events, and the execution of warrants and court orders. The force also operates specialised units such as a cyber crime wing, an anti‑terrorism squad, a women’s protection cell, and a narcotics control bureau, which enable it to address both traditional and emerging threats to public order. In addition to policing duties, KSP provides various citizen‑focused services, including issuing character certificates, verifying documents for employment or travel, and assisting in disaster response and relief efforts. The organisation serves the entire population of Karnataka, which exceeds sixty million residents spread across thirty districts and numerous urban and rural centres, making it one of the largest state police forces in the country.

KSP’s scale is reflected in its extensive organisational structure, which comprises multiple ranges, divisions, and police stations headed by senior officers ranging from Superintendent of Police to Director General of Police, the latter being the topmost authority appointed by the Government of Karnataka. The force operates under the administrative control of the state’s Home Department and receives its funding and policy direction from the Karnataka government, ensuring alignment with regional priorities and legal frameworks. A notable distinguishing attribute is its proactive cyber crime wing, which was directly involved in investigating the 2016 defacement of the KSP website by the hacker Faisal 1337 from Team Pak Cyber Attackers, demonstrating the unit’s capability to respond to digital threats. The organisation also emphasises community policing initiatives aimed at building trust and cooperation between officers and the public, a strategy intended to enhance crime prevention and improve overall safety. As a state government agency, KSP has no private owners or parent company; its accountability rests with the elected officials of Karnataka and the oversight mechanisms of the state legislature. This structural arrangement ensures that the police force remains subordinate to civilian authority while executing its mandate to protect and serve the citizens of Karnataka.
