Profile

The Bundesverband der Pharmazeutischen Industrie (BPI), also known as the German Pharmaceutical Industry Association, is the principal representative body for companies operating in the pharmaceutical sector in Germany. It works to advance the interests of its members by engaging with federal and state authorities on legislative and regulatory matters affecting drug development, manufacturing, pricing, and market access. The association provides its members with information services, policy analysis, and platforms for exchange on scientific, economic, and legal issues relevant to the industry. Its headquarters are located in Germany, placing it at the centre of national health‑policy discussions. Through its activities, BPI seeks to foster a favourable environment for innovation and patient access to medicines.

Beyond its advocacy role, the BPI is recognised for its specialised focus on the pharmaceutical industry, distinguishing it from broader business associations. It maintains close contacts with agencies such as the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices and the Ministry of Health, contributing expertise to consultations on drug safety, approval procedures, and healthcare financing. In January 2023 the association experienced a cyber incident in which a phishing attack compromised one of its Microsoft email accounts, potentially exposing personal data such as names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses, signature details, and message contents. Following the breach, BPI informed its members about the heightened risk of unsolicited communications and notified the Berlin data protection authority, while also announcing plans to strengthen its email security measures. These actions illustrate the organisation’s commitment to protecting member information and responding promptly to security threats.
