Frontier Software’s offerings encompass the calculation of wages, tax deductions, superannuation contributions, and the generation of payslips and related reports. Frontier Software distinguishes itself through its specialisation in payroll services for government clients, focusing on the accurate and timely processing of employee remuneration data. In November 2021, the company experienced a ransomware attack that resulted in the exfiltration of personal and financial data belonging to tens of thousands of South Australian government employees. The compromised information included names, tax file numbers, bank account details, employment records, and superannuation information, affecting between 38,000 and 80,000 individuals. Forensic analysis confirmed that the data breach originated from the company’s infrastructure, with no evidence of a wider compromise across its systems. The Conti ransomware group claimed responsibility for the intrusion, temporarily posting the incident on their leak portal before removing the entry. Following the breach, affected individuals were advised to monitor their financial accounts and exercise caution with unsolicited communications. The Department for Education was noted as unaffected because it did not utilise Frontier Software’s payroll systems.
