Truman State University, commonly referred to as TSU, is a higher education institution headquartered in the United States of America. In April 2023, TSU faced a severe operational crisis stemming from a cybersecurity incident. On April 21st, the university experienced a virus attack that compromised its entire campus network, forcing a complete shutdown. The attack primarily targeted university-issued Windows devices, leading to widespread and significant disruptions across all campus digital services. Consequently, all online classes were canceled indefinitely, and access to university email systems was completely severed. Data stored on network drives after a specific date was also lost due to the incident. While physical in-person classes continued, they were severely hampered by the lack of access to essential digital tools and resources normally available through the network.

The university undertook a complex recovery process following the network shutdown. Restoration of services was implemented progressively, with priority given to reinstating academic systems and basic internet connectivity essential for core educational functions. As part of the recovery and security hardening measures, Truman State mandated the installation of specific security software on all devices attempting to reconnect to the network. Furthermore, the institution required all users, including students, faculty, and staff, to change their account passwords before regaining access to university systems. This incident underscored the critical vulnerability of the university's digital infrastructure and the profound impact cybersecurity events can have on educational continuity and institutional operations.
