On March 4, 2019, Wawa disclosed that its point‑of‑sale systems had been infected with malware. The security incident was described as potentially affecting every store in the chain. The malicious software harvested payment card data, specifically the card number, expiration date, and cardholder name. Importantly, the malware did not obtain debit card personal identification numbers. It also did not capture the card verification value (CVV2) associated with payment cards. Driver’s license information was not collected by the infecting program. Transactions conducted at automated teller machines remained outside the scope of the compromise. Fuel pump payment processing, which relies on the same POS infrastructure, was likewise impacted by the infection. The breach did not alter the functionality of ATM services or any systems unrelated to the compromised POS components. Following the discovery, Wawa undertook remediation efforts while continuing to operate its stores across the East Coast.
