On 27 June 2017 the outlet was affected by the NotPetya ransomware attack that used a compromised update mechanism in widely used tax accounting software to infiltrate Ukrainian systems. The malware encrypted and overwrote files, rendering recovery impossible even after ransom payments, and caused extensive disruption across financial institutions, government ministries, energy facilities and media organisations. While the primary impact was concentrated in Ukraine, the attack produced significant spill‑over effects that reached multinational corporations worldwide. Ukrainian authorities and international cybersecurity firms attributed the operation to the Russian military hacking group Sandworm, which is linked to the GRU. The incident was described as part of a broader hybrid warfare campaign against Ukraine and resulted in billions of dollars of damage globally. Critical infrastructure such as radiation monitoring systems and corporate operations were among the sectors crippled by the assault. The event highlighted the vulnerability of supply‑chain updates and the far‑reaching consequences of state‑sponsored cyber aggression.
