Profile
Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) is a public higher education institution that provides teaching, research, and extension services across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fields such as sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, health, and the arts. The university also manages an open access portal that hosts more than fifty scholarly journals, making research freely available to the national and international community. Through its extension and outreach units, UCR engages with communities, businesses, and government bodies to transfer knowledge and support regional development.
As the oldest university in Costa Rica, UCR holds a prominent position in the country's educational landscape and is recognized as one of the largest higher education institutions by enrollment and campus presence. It operates multiple campuses and regional centers that extend its reach beyond the capital, San José, to other provinces. The university's student body includes a substantial number of Costa Rican learners as well as international students participating in exchange programs. Its workforce comprises faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and technical personnel who support the institution's academic and service missions.
UCR distinguishes itself through a strong emphasis on research and innovation, contributing to national scientific output and policy formulation. The university maintains autonomous status under Costa Rican law, governing itself through bodies established by its organic statute. Notable competencies include leadership in open knowledge initiatives, exemplified by the Academic Journals Portal that suffered a cyber attack on June 6, 2025, prompting a temporary shutdown and coordinated response by the Open Knowledge Office and the Computing Center. This incident highlighted the importance of prior safeguards that preserved data integrity while the institution worked to restore service and improve its cybersecurity posture.
