Profile

The Commack School District is a public school district headquartered in New York State, United States. It provides educational services to students residing within the Commack community, covering kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district delivers core academic instruction in accordance with New York State learning standards and offers a range of extracurricular activities, including athletics, arts, and clubs. It employs teachers, administrators, and support staff to facilitate learning and maintain school operations. The organization’s primary mission is to prepare students for future academic, career, and civic responsibilities. As a local governmental entity, it is funded through a combination of state, local, and federal sources.

The district is governed by an elected board of education that sets policy and oversees the superintendent, who acts as the chief executive officer. In response to a ransomware incident in November 2022, the superintendent notified parents and collaborated with Homeland Security, state and local law enforcement, and the district’s cyber insurance provider. The incident was treated as a criminal act and remains under investigation, with the district pledging to inform affected individuals if any personal data compromise is discovered. Earlier, in May 2015, three students installed a keylogger on a school computer, stole credentials, altered grades and schedules, and accessed basic contact information; the district detected the breach, corrected the changes, and worked with police to apprehend the perpetrators. These events illustrate the district’s established procedures for incident detection, response, and coordination with external authorities. The district also maintains cyber insurance coverage to help manage financial risks associated with cyber threats.
