Profile
Estadão, formally known as O Estado de S. Paulo, is a Brazilian newspaper that produces daily print and digital editions. It covers a broad range of topics including national politics, international affairs, business, culture, and sports. The organisation also offers multimedia content such as videos, podcasts, and interactive graphics through its website and mobile applications. Subscriptions provide access to both the printed newspaper and its online platform.
The newspaper has been in continuous publication since the late nineteenth century, making it one of the oldest circulating dailies in Brazil. Its editorial line is traditionally regarded as centrist to centre‑right, influencing public debate and policy discussions. Estadão has invested in digital transformation, launching a paywall and expanding its data journalism team to produce in‑depth investigative reports. These efforts have earned it recognition from press associations and awards for journalistic excellence.
In September 2014, Estadão’s website was compromised when attackers injected malicious iFrames that executed JavaScript targeting visitors’ home routers, attempting to alter DNS settings via brute‑force of default credentials. The incident highlighted how a media platform can be exploited to distribute attacks against consumer infrastructure, prompting the newspaper to strengthen its web security measures. Following the breach, Estadão implemented additional monitoring and collaborated with cybersecurity experts to prevent similar threats. The episode remains a notable case study in the intersection of media security and consumer device safety.
