Profile

Queensland University of Technology, also known as QUT, is a higher education institution based in Australia. As indicated by its name, the organisation places a strong emphasis on technology-related disciplines. It delivers academic programs across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition to teaching, QUT engages in research activities that align with its technological focus. The university serves students and scholars seeking education in fields such as engineering, information technology, and applied sciences.

On 22 December 2022, Queensland University of Technology experienced a ransomware attack attributed to the Royal ransomware group. The attack caused campus printers to produce large volumes of ransom notes demanding payment under threat of publishing stolen data. In response, the institution proactively shut down several IT systems, including those supporting student enrollment and course access, to contain the breach. Core financial and staff systems were reported to remain unaffected during the incident. The university activated its incident response plan, enlisted external specialists, and notified federal authorities. While some systems were compromised and files encrypted, limited functionality for accepting enrollment offers was retained for students. Documentation processes remained disrupted until the affected systems could be restored.
