Profile narrative

The Co-operative Group, known publicly as Co-op, is a United Kingdom‑based consumer co‑operative that principally runs a nationwide chain of food retail stores. These stores sell a broad range of groceries, fresh produce, dairy, meat, bakery items, household essentials and convenience goods. Beyond food retail, the Co‑op operates funeral care homes, legal advice services, pharmacy outlets and offers travel insurance and motor insurance products. It also provides banking and savings products through its former subsidiary, though those services have been transferred to other providers in recent years. The organisation serves customers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with a presence in both urban centres and rural communities. Store formats vary from large supermarkets and hypermarkets to smaller neighbourhood shops and convenience outlets. As a co‑operative, its primary aim is to meet the needs and expectations of its members rather than to generate profit for external shareholders. Surpluses generated by the business are typically reinvested in operations, used to improve services or distributed to members as a share of the annual dividend.

A defining feature of the Co‑op is its member‑owned structure, whereby individuals who shop at its stores can become members and gain voting rights on key resolutions. This governance model allows members to influence the society’s strategy, ethical policies and community investment decisions. The Co‑op places a strong emphasis on ethical trading, promoting fair wages, responsible sourcing of products and reducing environmental impact through initiatives such as carbon‑neutral logistics and waste reduction programmes. It also runs community‑focused programmes that support local charities, youth projects and food‑bank partnerships, reflecting its commitment to social responsibility. Structurally, the organisation is an independent co‑operative society registered under the Co‑operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 and is not a subsidiary of any larger corporate entity. Its board of directors is elected by the membership, ensuring democratic control over the society’s affairs. In early 2025 the Co‑op disclosed that it had suffered attempted cyberattacks which led to the temporary shutdown of certain back‑office and call‑center IT systems while stores continued to trade normally. The organisation stated that it was working with the UK National Cyber Security Centre to investigate the incidents and had not reported any confirmed data breach to the Information Commissioner’s Office at the time of disclosure.
