The Mexican government is the federal authority responsible for public administration across the nation. It operates the tax authority that collects federal revenues and enforces fiscal legislation. The government also maintains the civil registry, which records births, marriages, deaths and issues identity documents. In addition, it manages the voter registry and oversees electoral processes for federal and local elections. Through these functions it provides essential services to citizens, residents and businesses throughout Mexico.

The scale of its data holdings was highlighted in a 2025 cyber incident in which attackers compromised ten state entities and a financial institution linked to the government. The breach began with the tax authority and resulted in the exfiltration of more than 150 GB of civil registry, tax and voter records. This exposure affected roughly 195 million individual identities stored in those systems. A separate claim by the Chronus Group alleged that 2.3 TB of data was taken from twenty‑five state sites, impacting about thirty‑six million people. These events underscore the government’s role as a central repository of personal and fiscal information. As the federal administration of Mexico, it has no parent organization and is the sovereign entity governing the country.
