The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for enforcing consumer protection and antitrust laws. Structurally, the FTC operates as an independent regulatory commission that is not housed within any executive department. In June 2016, the FTC’s then Chief Technologist, Lorrie Cranor, experienced an identity theft incident in which an impostor used a fake identification to hijack her mobile phone account at a retail store. The attacker obtained two new iPhones charged to her account, deactivated her existing devices, and caused service disruption before she reclaimed control and filed fraud reports. This event highlighted the vulnerability of mobile accounts to social engineering and underscored broader security implications, given that phones often serve as tools for multi‑factor authentication in both personal and professional contexts.
