Profile
The Chilean National Municipal Information System, also known as Sistema Nacional de Información Municipal de Chile, is a governmental information system located in Chile. It serves as the national platform for managing and disseminating data related to the country's municipalities. The system is designed to support municipal administration by providing centralized access to information resources. Its role is to facilitate coordination between municipal entities and national authorities. As a public sector entity, it operates under the auspices of the Chilean government. The organization's primary function is to maintain and update municipal records and statistics.
In May 2015, the system was targeted by the hacktivist collective Anonymous, resulting in a breach that exposed sensitive data. The attack, attributed to the individual known as CyberBloc operating under the operations OpChile and OpMarchaestudiantil, led to the leakage of login credentials, names, email addresses, password hashes, and telephone numbers of officials. In addition to data exfiltration, the attackers defaced the associated website, replacing its content with a black page and rendering the service inaccessible. The hacktivists cited the fatal shootings of two protesters as motivation for the intrusion, linking the action to broader student protests against education policies and police brutality. The breach was reported by Hackread, which described the leaked credentials and the defacement of the site.
