Profile

Crelan is a Belgian bank that provides a full range of banking products and services to private customers, professionals, farmers and businesses. Its offerings include current and savings accounts, consumer and mortgage loans, credit facilities, insurance products and payment solutions. The bank serves both urban and rural communities, with a particular emphasis on the agricultural sector. All activities are conducted under the supervision of the National Bank of Belgium and the European Central Bank.

Crelan operates as a cooperative bank, meaning that its customers can also be members and have a say in the institution’s governance. The bank is majority‑owned by the French Crédit Agricole Group, which acquired a controlling stake in 2013. As a cooperative, it emphasizes long‑term relationships with its clients.

In January 2016 Crelan suffered a €70 million loss after falling victim to a business‑email‑compromise scam in which attackers impersonated senior executives to trick the finance department into authorising fraudulent transfers. The loss was identified during an internal audit, prompting immediate reporting to authorities and the implementation of stronger security controls. The bank absorbed the impact through its existing reserves, ensuring that client services and partner relationships remained uninterrupted. This episode highlighted the importance of robust authentication and verification procedures in the bank’s operational framework.
