Profile
The French Ministry of Economy, also known as the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Recovery, is responsible for shaping and implementing the nation's economic and financial policy. It prepares the annual state budget, oversees tax collection and customs, and monitors public expenditure to ensure fiscal sustainability. The ministry also regulates financial markets, supervises banking and insurance sectors, and works to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. In addition, it conducts macroeconomic analysis and forecasting to inform government decisions and to represent France in international economic forums such as the European Union and the G20. Its activities extend across the entire territory, with regional directorates that adapt national policies to local economic conditions. Through these functions, the ministry influences both domestic economic performance and France's role in the global economy.
The ministry is distinguished by its dual mandate of economic policy formulation and financial regulation, giving it a unique position at the intersection of macroeconomic strategy and sector‑specific oversight. It employs a large corps of civil servants, including economists, financial inspectors, and legal experts, who provide the technical expertise needed for complex policy design and enforcement. As part of the French executive branch, the ministry reports directly to the Prime Minister and, ultimately, to the President of the Republic, and its budget is approved by the Parliament. It does not have a parent company or subsidiary structure; instead, it comprises various directorates and agencies such as the Directorate General of the Treasury, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), and the General Directorate of Public Finance. These internal units allow the ministry to combine policy analysis, data collection, and operational implementation under a single governmental authority.
