Profile

The Danish Parliament, also known as Folketinget, is the unicameral legislative body of Denmark. It is responsible for passing legislation, approving the national budget, and overseeing the work of the government. Members of Folketinget are elected by proportional representation to represent constituencies across the country. The parliament convenes in the Christiansborg Palace complex in Copenhagen, which serves as its headquarters. Its proceedings include debates, committee work, and voting on bills that shape Danish law and policy. The institution also has the authority to express confidence or no‑confidence in the prime minister and cabinet. Legislative proposals may originate from ministers, individual members, or citizen initiatives that meet procedural thresholds. Public sessions are generally open, and transcripts are made available to promote transparency and civic engagement.

Folketinget comprises 179 members, including two representatives each from Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Elections are held at least every four years, though they can be called earlier under certain constitutional provisions. As the supreme legislative authority, it operates independently of the executive while collaborating on governance. The parliament’s constitutional role is defined by the Danish Constitution, which grants it exclusive lawmaking power. Standing committees specialize in areas such as finance, foreign affairs, health, and education to scrutinize legislation in detail. The parliament also ratifies international treaties and approves Denmark’s participation in supranational organizations. Notable incidents affecting its digital presence include a distributed denial‑of‑service attack on 11 December 2015 that temporarily disabled its website. This event highlighted the vulnerability of governmental online services and prompted subsequent security reviews.
