Framingham Heart Study

The Framingham Heart Study is a long‑running epidemiological research project that investigates the causes and progression of cardiovascular disease. It began in 1948 with an initial cohort of 5,209 adult residents of Framingham, Massachusetts, and has since enrolled their offspring and grandchildren to create a multi‑generational design. Participants undergo detailed clinical examinations, laboratory tests, and lifestyle questionnaires approximately every four to six years, providing repeated measures of blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight, and other health indicators. The study’s primary aim is to identify modifiable and non‑modifiable risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and related conditions. Findings from the Framingham Heart Study have been instrumental in shaping preventive cardiology guidelines and public health policies worldwide. The project operates as a collaborative effort between the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health and Boston University School of Medicine.

Over its more than seven‑decade history, the Framingham Heart Study has followed more than 15,000 participants across three generations, providing one of the largest and most continuously updated cardiovascular datasets in existence. Its distinguishing attributes include the pioneering identification of major modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity, and the development of the Framingham Risk Score, a widely used tool for estimating an individual's likelihood of experiencing a coronary event. The study’s data and biological specimens are made available to qualified researchers through the NHLBI’s Biologic Specimen and Data Repository, facilitating numerous ancillary investigations and genome‑wide association studies. This openness, combined with the depth and longevity of the cohort, has established the Framingham Heart Study as a cornerstone of epidemiologic research, influencing both academic inquiry and clinical practice. Structurally, the Framingham Heart Study is not a separate corporate entity but a research program housed within Boston University, receiving primary funding and oversight from the NHLBI while benefiting from the university’s administrative and infrastructural support.
