The Government of Gujarat serves as the administrative authority for the Indian state of Gujarat, tasked with formulating and executing state‑level policies and delivering a broad spectrum of public services to its residents. It oversees numerous departments such as health, education, agriculture, revenue, water resources, and infrastructure, each responsible for sector‑specific functions and the implementation of both state and central government schemes. The ransomware attack of 12 May 2017, which affected approximately 120 computers in its IT network, highlighted the organisation’s dependence on digital infrastructure and prompted subsequent actions such as patch installations, system isolations, and plans for a strengthened cyber‑coordination framework. While the incident also impacted other regional entities, it underscored the necessity for integrated cyber‑defence measures across state agencies and reinforced ongoing efforts to modernise IT security practices. Structurally, the Government of Gujarat derives its authority from the constitutional provisions governing state administrations in India, operating under the leadership of the Chief Minister and the Governor, with no private ownership or parent entity, and is accountable to the state legislature and the electorate.
