The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia’s national science agency. The incident was detected by the agency, investigated by federal cybercrime authorities and resulted in the contractor pleading guilty to data modification charges and receiving a 15‑month intensive community correction order with 300 hours of service.

The agency maintains a portfolio of national research facilities, including the Australia Telescope National Facility, the Marine National Facility and the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.
