Swedish Armed Forces

The Swedish Armed Forces, also known as Försvarsmakten, is the government agency tasked with the military defence of Sweden. It operates under the authority of the Ministry of Defence and receives its strategic direction from the Government and the Riksdag. Its primary responsibilities include safeguarding national sovereignty, protecting the country’s territorial integrity, and contributing to international peace‑support operations when mandated. The organisation is composed of the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Home Guard, each organised into brigades, flotillas, wings and battalions that are stationed across Swedish territory, with its central headquarters located in Stockholm.

Furthermore, the Armed Forces engage in regular joint exercises with allied nations and maintain close cooperation with the domestic defence industry to ensure interoperability and technological readiness.

Structurally, the Swedish Armed Forces is a direct subordinate of the Swedish Government, with no private ownership or parent‑company relationships. It is financed through the national defence budget and overseen by the Defence Materiel Administration for procurement, logistics and materiel management. The chain of command flows from the Minister of Defence through the Supreme Commander to the various service branches, ensuring unified direction and accountability.
