The attack compromised backup files containing the museum's personal information. The museum confirmed that the stolen data did not include sensitive financial identifiers such as credit card numbers, banking details, or social security numbers, but involved generic personal information that could potentially be misused. The breach was not detected by Blackbaud for several months, and the museum's data was accessed during that prolonged period. Following Blackbaud's investigation and collaboration with law enforcement, the provider stated that the attacker likely did not access or misuse the extracted data beyond the initial theft. The museum subsequently notified individuals whose information was contained in the affected backups, in accordance with its provider's discovery of the incident. This event highlights the operational risk associated with reliance on external vendors for data stewardship and the potential for extended dwell times in supply chain attacks.
