Profile

Providence Children's Museum is a non-profit organization located in Providence, Rhode Island, dedicated to providing educational and interactive experiences for children and families. As a children's museum, its core mission involves creating engaging exhibits and programs that foster learning through play, serving the local community and visitors in the region. The institution handles personal information related to its members, visitors, and donors, necessitating the management of contact details and other generic personal data for operational and engagement purposes. This data management function is supported through the use of third-party software service providers, a common practice for many cultural and non-profit institutions.

The museum's data security posture was notably tested in February 2020 when it became one of two Rhode Island entities affected by a ransomware attack against its software provider, Blackbaud. The attack compromised backup files containing the museum's personal information. The museum confirmed that the stolen data did not include sensitive financial identifiers such as credit card numbers, banking details, or social security numbers, but involved generic personal information that could potentially be misused. The breach was not detected by Blackbaud for several months, and the museum's data was accessed during that prolonged period. Following Blackbaud's investigation and collaboration with law enforcement, the provider stated that the attacker likely did not access or misuse the extracted data beyond the initial theft. The museum subsequently notified individuals whose information was contained in the affected backups, in accordance with its provider's discovery of the incident. This event highlights the operational risk associated with reliance on external vendors for data stewardship and the potential for extended dwell times in supply chain attacks.
