Profile
CNES is the French national space agency, tasked with defining and executing the country's space policy. It oversees the development and operation of satellite systems for Earth observation, telecommunications, navigation and scientific research. The agency also manages France's contributions to launch vehicle programmes, notably the Ariane family, and supports the preparation and exploitation of space missions conducted in cooperation with European and international partners. Its activities span the full lifecycle of space projects, from early concept studies to in‑orbit operations and data exploitation.
Headquartered in France, CNES operates from several sites across the mainland and the overseas department of French Guiana, where the Guiana Space Centre provides launch capabilities for European and commercial customers. The agency maintains a network of laboratories, test facilities and control centres that enable it to design, build and validate spacecraft and ground segments. Through these locations CNES sustains a continuous presence in the European space sector and contributes to the accessibility of space for both institutional and commercial users.
CNES distinguishes itself by combining a strong technical expertise in spacecraft engineering with a regulatory and programme‑management role for French space activities. It acts as the contracting authority for national space programmes, coordinates research with universities and industry, and ensures compliance with national and international space law. Its notable competencies include the development of high‑resolution Earth observation instruments, the integration of payloads on launch vehicles, and the operation of satellite constellations for services such as climate monitoring and disaster management.
As a public administrative establishment under the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, CNES is wholly owned by the French state. It reports to the government through the ministry and works closely with other national agencies, the European Space Agency and international partners to implement France’s space strategy. This governmental status provides CNES with stable funding and a mandate to pursue long‑term space objectives that serve both public interest and economic development.
